Course Objectives

Teaching the basic concepts of earthquake resistant design to B.S. level Structural Engineers.

Course Content

Nature and causes of earthquakes, earthquake magnitude and intensity, earthquake ground motions. Seismic response analysis of simple structures. Elastic response spectra, design spectrum. Equivalent lateral load procedure, response spectrum analysis procedure. Earthquake design criteria. Seismic codes. Application of capacity design principles to frame structures. Prerequisites: CE 383 and CE 305.

Course Learning Outcomes

Students are exposed to design experience through hands-on design of an actual building.

The design work carried out in case studies conform to the design codes listed in the references.

In design applications, analytical models of buildings are prepared, analyzed numerically under the given earthquake excitations, and designed accordingly to satisfy the target performances. Almost one third of the courses are devoted to professional design applications.
